Preacher Boy what's your take on RC Sproul Jr speaking at the Ligonier Conference again? He spoke at the last one barely a month after he'd been defrocked. That's never made any sense to me. Now it's happening all over again. Doesn't being defrocked mean anything anymore to Reformed people?

Stephanie,

You will have to inform me on the RC Sproul JR situation since i have not heard of it....

Please let me know what you've heard/know.

Personally, i've listened to RC Jr speak before and feel like the primary reason why he is included in the Ligonier Conference is because of Pops. That is R.C. seniors decision to make since he it's his conference.

It's possible for a pastor to be wrongly accused of something (e.g. Spurgeon, Steve Lawson, etc, etc); With that said, please let me know what do you know?

I would hope R.C. Jr is living a life that's above reproach. Reformed people do hold 1 Tim 3 and Titus very strictly.

Paul Lamey Says in response to CK:

..all I know is that it has created a stir in certain Presby circles but I do not know any details. Much of what I read on the issue seemed to be hear-say and gossip from both sides. I think whatever the issues are they should not be settled by blogs and websites but by the local leadership of the church. On a side not I believe this is also part of the problem with the Presby model of elders as opposed to a local church model…but that’s another story.

Stephanie,

I have found websites discussing this matter and see their are two sides being presented. I have no idea who is right and who is telling the truth. Sorry I am not much help.

Thanks at least for being honest and admitting you don't really know much of anything about it. I agree there's a lot of blogging that's gone on over the defrocking of RC Sproul Jr, but his defrocking isn't just "hearsay and gossip" it's a fact. The RPCGA's defrocking documents can be found here.

Paul, I don't think it's right for you to criticize Presbyterian government. The fact that you don't like it doesn't make it wrong, and obviously RC Jr and even RC Sproul Sr would disagree with you since both claim to be Presbies. When a man like RC Jr takes a vow to obey his Presbytery he should obey them.

Caleb, RC Jr obviously doesn't live a life above reproach or he'd never been defrocked. He violated his ordination vows. He abused families, including one family which he unjustly "disciplined" and unjustly tried to excommunicate, and then he ordered his church to shun them and even their five children. He also committed tax fraud by stealing the tax ID number of another denomination.

I come back to my original question, "Doesn't being defrocked mean anything anymore to Reformed people?" I guess I got my answer.

Stephanie,

I am a Reformed Baptist pastor and honestly don't quite understand how the Presb. church functions (your church government).

I have read people on the other side of your perspective who say the leaders who disciplined R.C. Jr also messed up.

Without talking to both parties i would have a very difficult time trying to "choose a side."

For that reason (and more) i have decided not to take a formal position on this matter.

Reformed Christians do believe in Matthew 18 church discipline. We practice it much differently at our church than yours but I trust both are church familes are wanting to please God in/through this. We affirm the holiness of God and the importance of biblical restoration!

I'm with Stephanie on this one. It's offensive to see a defrocked man preaching. RC Jr needs to find another vocation.

The big news now though is that Ligonier Ministries sued Christian blogger Frank Vance. So how do they get away with violating 1 Cor. 6? That's what I'd like to know.

I am not familiar with this matter and have not been able to hear the other sides perspective.

In the future please include links to this as well so we don't violate the Proverbs wisdom on this matter.
