A Remedy For Dealing with Pride

It is difficult not to think more highly of ourselves than we should. The flesh is the souls greatest enemy, even though Christians are no longer enslaved to it, see Rom 7-8.

Do you want to know a practical Remedy For Dealing with Pride? Read Christian biographies like Iain Murray's The Forgotten Spurgeon or Dallimore's Susanna Wesley.

But even better read John Foxe's The New Foxe's Book of Martyrs. These Christian men and women and boys and girls of the faith (past and present) will shatter our self appointed trophies of pride. They are the true heroes of the faith (note Hebrews 11).

I ordered Foxe's book and am looking forward to reading it. Great sermon yesterday. I appreciated your sermon illustration in talking about the martyrs from the 1500's. Now that I am studying church history and reading biographies, illustrations like that jump out more and become more meaningful. Yes, you should get Dr. Lloyd-Jones book, "Knowing the Times. Excellent read. He talks in there how Christians need to study history and read biographies of those who have been foremost in asserting and defending the faith because we have a tendancy to live in the here and now and think we are the first and only ones to have been defenders of the faith. He says, "The more any Christian acquaints himself with the story, the stronger he will be in spiritual vigour.

Have a good day,
